Salem Black River Presbyterian Church and Cemetery-Sumter County, South Carolina

Founded in 1759, the Salem Black River Presbyterian Church is also known as the Brick Church. The first brick church was built in 1802 and used until 1846. The current building has been in use since 1846. Like many antebellum churches in the South, a second-floor gallery was used where the enslaved people of the local plants who attended the church would also worship. In 1867, the Black church members broke away to form the Goodwill Presbyterian Church.

The white Old Session House was built in 1846 and used for meetings and a library. Author James McBride Dabbs (1896-1970) donated his library to the church. He was a lifelong member of the church.

The cemetery was first used in 1794 and officially deeded to the church in 1830.

The church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

Trenton Presbyterian Church-Trenton, South Carolina

This is the oldest Presbyterian church in Edgefield County, South Carolina. It was built in 1881.

Pleasant Grove Presbyterian Church-Chester, South Carolina

The church was founded in 1847.

Berean Church-Beaufort, South Carolina

Berean Church Berean Presbyterian Church was founded by Samuel J. Bampfield, an influential African American political figure during Reconstruction. Bampfield served in the S.C. House of Representatives, was Beaufort’s postmaster, and clerk of the county court. In 1892 the congregation purchased this lot and constructed a church in the Gothic Revival style. Solomon P. Hood, who later was appointed U.S. Minister to Liberia, was the first pastor.

J. I. Washington Branch Library In 1931 the building was purchased by the Beaufort Township Library and converted for use as a segregated branch library for African Americans. It operated in that capacity until 1965 when this branch closed and Township Library was desegregated. The building was later used as headquarters for the Neighborhood Youth Corps and in 1993 was purchased by USC Beaufort for use as an art studio.

John I. Blackburn Presbyterian Church-Keysville, Georgia

Burke County

Tied to the Boggs Academy in Keysville, the Blackburn Church began as the Morgan Grove Presbyterian Church in 1907. Five children began school in the church building. Unfortunately, in 1930, the building was destroyed by fire. A new church was built due to the generosity of the Blackburn family. An addition was added in 1962.

Mt Carmel Presbyterian Church- Mount Carmel, South Carolina

McCormick County

Mount Carmel Presbyterian Church sits atop a small hill in Mount Carmel, South Carolina. It creates a picturesque view along the road. The church was built in 1890, and the congregation used it until the 1950s.
