Doctor’s Office and an Old Store, Georgia

Howell, Echols County

One of the few remaining buildings in the unincorporated community of Howell, Georgia. I credit ID of building to Brian Brown at Vanishing Georgia.

R.M. Jones General Store, Georgia

Troup County, Georgia

Known as the Crossroads Store, the store was built and opened in 1903. It’s been owned by the Avery family since the 1920s. Located in Jones Crossroad, Georgia, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2009.

Gold & Grass Farms, Georgia

Ball Ground, Cherokee County

Gold & Grass Farms- That’s the sign you see from the road, but this is the last remaining building from the Creighton/Franklin Gold Mine in Ball Ground, Georgia. Built in 1890, the “Shingle House” served the area as a commissary, post office, and a boarding house.

Cates House and Store, South Carolina

Glenn Springs, Spartanburg County

Built as a home in 1885, Robert Allen Cates, the town’s postmaster, lived here with his family until he chose to make it into a general store. In 1938, the nearby church used it as a Sunday school. The building was recently restored. It’s a contributing building to the Glenn Springs Historic District.

Maxeys Country Store, Georgia

Maxeys, Oglethorpe County

This building used to sit at the center of town in Maxeys, Georgia. Unfortunately, it burned a few months after I took this photo. The Winkles, the couple who ran the store, lived in the back. Mr. Winkle, a former mayor of the town, lost his life battling the fire which happened in January 2021.

A. J. Gillen Department Store, Georgia

Maxeys, Oglethorpe County

Built in 1908, the AJ Gillen Department Store was known as Macy’s of the South. It’s been awhile since I’ve been to Maxeys, but there was a movement towards restoration. In 2018, it was listed as a Place in PPeril by the Georgia Trust. It’s a lovely building with superb detailing.

Waynesboro Grocery Company, Georgia

Waynesboro, Burke County

Once a wholesale grocery distribution location, the brick building was built in 1898 by local merchants. W. C. Hillhouse managed it. It’s a contributing building to the Waynesboro Historic District.

Cook Caldwell General Store, Georgia

Friendship Community, Fulton County

The Friendship Community is now part of the area in Fulton County known as Chattahoochee Hills. It’s not far from Palmetto. Homer Cook started the general store around 1890 and ran it until 1954. Jewell Caldwell, Homer’s sister, took over when her brother passed away. According to a Cook descendant, their family stayed in the area until the boll weevil came to the area.
