These are some of the oldest crypts I’ve photographed in the state of Georgia. Located in Hillcrest Cemetery, I suspect these were made close to the time the cemetery was founded in 1826. There are no visible names on the crypts.
Folk artist Howard Finster built Paradise Garden in Pennville, Georgia to share other creators’ work and his own. He is often considered one of the most prolific artists having made over 46,000 pieces of art. If you’re ever in north Georgia, it’s worth a visit. Since my visit in 2014, there has been significant restoration work. They’ve also added places on AirBnb for people to reserve.
Located in Oak Hill Cemetery, this monument memorializes Augusta Williams (1894-1901) who passed away at the age of 7. The tree represents a life cut short.
This angel sits at the edge of the Moxley Cemetery. There’s no name at the base. I am uncertain if this is simply decorative, or it’s supposed to mark someone grave.
Oral history states that the church started in 1812 in a log cabin on the current property. The cemetery has been in existence since approximately the same time. The church and cemetery were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2011.
