Hawkes Free Children’s Library in Griffin, Georgia

Hawkes Free Children Libraries were the vision of Albert King Hawkes (1848-1916), an Atlanta optometrist, inventor, and philanthropist. He wanted people in rural areas to have more access to libraries and theaters.

He died before his dream came to fruition. In his will, he left money to build libraries across the state. The Griffin library, designed by Neel Reid and completed in 1917, is one of six remaining libraries and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Hawkes is buried in Westview Cemetery in Atlanta.

Vineyard School of Vineyard, Georgia

Northwest of Griffin, Georgia, is a school that is one of the remaining reminders of a town known as Vineyard, Georgia. The Vineyard School was built in 1930 and used as a school until the 1960s. It then served as a cooperative education center for Spalding County. In recent years, it was home to the Beacon Voices of Christ Outreach Ministries. Currently, it does not appear that the building is being used.

Red Oak United Methodist Church-Birdie Community, Georgia

Front view of building

The Birdie Community was established in 1894 in northwest Spalding County. The Red Oak United Methodist Church was founded in 1871. There isn’t much published history on the church.

Behind the more modern church building is this turn of the century wooden building. I am not certain of it is a church or school, I am leaning more to it being a school based on the doors and windows.

The church seems to still be active. There were some fairly recent burials in the cemetery.

This was the oldest marker I found. Epcy Starr died in 1904.
There were several Eldren Bailey markers in the cemetery.

Haistens Hospital- Griffin, Georgia

Built in 1910, the Haistens Hospital replaced the town hospital and was demolished to build the Griffin City Hall. Designed by architect Haralson Bleckley, the hospital, which later served as a funeral home, was listed on The Georgia Trust’s Places in Peril. It was purchased through their revolving fund, but I am uncertain what work has been done since it was purchased a few years ago.
