Jones Chapel-Wilkes County, Georgia
Located on a long dirt road in Wilkes County, Georgia, the Jones Chapel is an abandoned church that used to serve the spiritual needs for the Black community in the surrounding community.
Historic Rural Churches of Georgia believes that it likely started as a white church and switched to a Black church in the early 1900s.
Sorrells Springs Primitive Baptist Church and School, Georgia
Monroe, Walton County
Founded in 1836, the Sorrells Springs Primitive Baptist property has a school and cemetery. I spoke to someone who was visiting a loved one in the cemetery. He confirmed it was a school but could not remember when it closed as a school.
Cane Creek Missionary Baptist-Meriwether County, Georgia
Located in Meriwether County, the Cane Creek Missionary Baptist Church is not far from Woodbury, Georgia. I have not located much on the church. Based on the death dates in the cemetery, the congregation has been around since the 1920s.
Liberty Hill Primitive Baptist Church-Lamar County, Georgia
From the sign on the door, “The last meeting was on September 25, 1987. The final members were Ollie Kinard, Lillian Rivers, and Shirley Ray. The last pastor was Elder Rubert Nobles.” It now serves the congregation of the Church of the Lost and Found.
Union Primitive Baptist Church and Cemetery-Goggans, Georgia
The church was founded in 1837 in what is present day Monroe County. The current church is the second one for the congregation after it was built in 1890. The Goggans family (founders of the town, too) gave the land for the physical establishment of a church and cemetery.
