Cates House and Store-Glenn Springs, South Carolina

Spartanburg County

Built as a home in 1885, Robert Allen Cates, the town’s postmaster, lived here with his family until he chose to make it into a general store. In 1938, the nearby church used it as a Sunday school. The building was recently restored. It’s a contributing building to the Glenn Springs Historic District.

Store-Edgemoor, South Carolina

It’s not often you see a knife wielding mannequin on the porch of a store.

Maxeys Country Store-Maxeys, Georgia

This building used to sit at the center of town in Maxeys, Georgia. Unfortunately, it burned a few months after I took this photo. The Winkles, the couple who ran the store, lived in the back. Mr. Winkle, a former mayor of the town, lost his life battling the fire which happened in January 2021.

Durham Apothecary and Museum-Maxeys, Georgia

This was the apothecary initially for Dr. Milledge Spencer Durham. Built in the early 1840s, Dr. William Meigs Durham took over next. His brother, Dr. John Lindsey Durham, worked with him for a bit in the office. William eventually sold the business to his cousins, Dr. Samuel Durham and Dr. William Orlando Durham.

A. J. Gillen Department Store-Maxeys, Georgia

Oglethorpe County

Built in 1908, the AJ Gillen Department Store was known as Macy’s of the South. It’s been awhile since I’ve been to Maxeys, but there was a movement towards restoration. In 2018, it was listed as a Place in Peril by the Georgia Trust. It’s a lovely building with superb detailing.

Waynesboro Grocery Company, Georgia

Waynesboro, Burke County

Once a wholesale grocery distribution location, the brick building was built in 1898 by local merchants. W. C. Hillhouse managed it. It’s a contributing building to the Waynesboro Historic District.
