Mary Elizabeth Tyler (1881-1924) was a public relations person who co-founded the Southern Publicity Association, whose more known clients were the Ku Klux Klan, the Red Cross, and the Anti-Saloon League. Part of the company’s job is that they got paid to sign up new members for the Ku Klux Klan.
This position gave her status and wealth. She was the highest-ranking woman in the KKK. She was also able to have this Classical Revival home built in 1924. At her death, her estate was worth more than $500,000.
This home is another example of how hate built wealth in Atlanta.
