Clinch Chapel Methodist Church-Camden County, Georgia

Macchca Mowat Alderman

This church traces its roots to right after the Civil War. The first church was built in 1896. The current structure was built in 1992.

This cemetery features a mixture of headstones. Many contain concrete markers with applique cherubs and hands. One of the more intriguing markers is the Madonna bust which can be found in several cemeteries along the coast. Of the ones I’ve found, the churches are several miles apart and in different counties. Both the applique markers and the Madonna busts communicate the regional nature of vernacular markers. The Madonna markers can all be seen here.

Oak Grove Methodist Church-Screven County

William Elias, 1831-1911
Blossie Jackson, 1899-1926
Lyiner

Oak Grove Methodist Church in Screven County was founded in 1876 by freedmen and women. The current church building dates to 1919. While the church is no longer in use and has fallen in disrepair, the cemetery is still active. This is one of my favorite church buildings. Between the setting and the colors, it’s one I am glad to have seen in person.

Poplar Spring School and Church-Atlanta, Georgia

Fulton County

The Poplar Spring School sits on the grounds of the Poplar Spring United Methodist Church. Built when the church was a part of Campbell County, this is a beautiful example of a one-teacher type school.

The church began in 1867 in a brush arbor. This is at least the third physical structure the church has had in it’s history. You can read more of their history on the chirch’s website. Outside of the church and school, there is a small cemetery and picnic area on the church grounds.

Rock Chapel United Methodist Church-Dekalb County, Georgia

Rock Chapel Methodist Church was the oldest Methodist congregation in DeKalb County, Georgia. Founded in 1825, the congregation started on what is Rock Chapel Road near where the Joseph Bond house is. In 1834, Bond donated land west of its first location. A church was built that burned in 1870. The current structure is what replaced that building.

Based on church documents, enslaved members were included in the church rolls. In 1846, 11 people were listed. In the 1858 rolls, the comgregation included 61 enslaved people.

Based on information I found online, I believe the congregation dissolved in 2016.

Updated-The church is still active. Thank you to Rev. Clough for providing this information.

Wesley United Methodist Church-Screven County, Georgia

Looking into the window of the church built in 1903

I am unable to find much about this church, but it is located outside of Sylvania in Screven County, Georgia.

This second building was built in in 1956.

Sharon Methodist Church, Georgia

If you’ve never visited Sharon in Taliaferro County, I highly recommend it. Outside of the oldest Catholic church in the state, it also has this beauty, the Sharon Methodist Church.
