Basket Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, Georgia

The Basket Creek Baptist Church Cemetery was established in 1880 with its first burial. Unlike other cemeteries, there is no vegetation. The cemetery is swept and the plot mounds are rebuilt. This practice is tied to West African burial practices. It’s the only known cemetery in Georgia that utilizes this practice. It is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Corporal Frank Dorris, Georgia

Douglasville, Douglas County

Corporal Frank Dorris was killed in action during World War I at Belleau Wood, France in Battle of Chateau Thierry on June 8, 1918. The 26 day battle resulted in 1,811 US lives lost. It is unknown how many Germans lost their lives, but over 1,600 were taken prisoner.
