Captain Joshua Chandler’s Grave-Chincoteague Island, Virginia

This is the lonely grave of Captain Joshua Chandler, who died when lightning struck the schooner he was on. He was leaning on a brass pole with one hand and was holding a pan of biscuits. After he died, his shipmates took a biscuit to remember him. They gave one to the family, who passed it down over generations. The family donated the biscuit to the Chincoteague museum. It is now on permanent display there. Sadly, I didn’t have time to visit the 150-year-old biscuit.
