Madison’s First Duplex-Madison, Georgia

As I was walking back from a home on the Georgia Trust’s Fall Ramble, I noticed a small sign that said “Madison’s First Duplex.” In a town known for its palatial older homes, I was a bit surprised to see the recognition for a type of home reserved mostly for the middle class. Duplexes in the United States began to appear on the East Coast in the late 1800s, but their growth took off in the 1920s.

This Craftsman duplex was built in 1920 and was also known as the Ridgeway-Tumell Cottage. As someone who used to live in a Craftsman duplex, this was my favorite place I lived.

Leyden House Columns-Atlanta, Georgia

The Peachtree Circle Apartments are connected to one of the oldest grand homes in Atlanta. Built in 1858, the Leyden House survived the Civil War and at least one fire to finally be demolished by the wrecking ball of development.

The home was located on Peachtree Street in downtown. It’s neighbor was the Governor’s Mansion. In 1913, Asa Candler purchased the land for the development. He had the columns moved for the building of the Woodberry Hall School for Girls, which is now the Peachtree Circle Apartments in Ansley Park.

Beverly Hills Inn Apartments-Atlanta, Georgia

Built in 1929, this apartment building served as apartments, condos, and a home for elderly widows. The most famous guests are the ghosts of three older women who lived in the building. They are known to throw drinking glasses and whisper to rude guests, “Get out!” If you are a long-term resident, they supposedly leave you alone.

Located in the Hampton Heights neighborhood, I fell in love with this duplex.
