Charles Madden House, Georgia

Tennille, Washington County

This Queen Anne House was designed by architect, Charles Choate, who focused on designing buildings and homes in the South. Charles Madden was a Black railway clerk who worked his way up the ranks and was able to afford and contract a known architect to build his home. Tennille has the railroad that rights through town, and the tracks are a less than a bock from this home. It was put on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999.

Durham Place-Maxeys, Georgia

This cottage was built in 1844 and expanded in 1877. The Victorian details were added at this time. It started as the home for Dr. Milledge Spencer Durham.

Queen Anne Victorian House-Atlanta, Georgia

This home was located in the Summerhill section of Atlanta. Unfortunately, it was demolished not long after I took the photo.

Grand Gables Mansion-Kingston, Georgia

The house started as a four room house in 1845 in Kingston, Georgia and was expanded upon in 1887. The home is now a private residence and event venue.

The Caldwell Sisters in Cave Hill Cemetery, Kentucky

Louisville, Jefferson County

Entombed below this monument are Mary Elizabeth and Mary Gwendolyn Caldwell. Born into wealth (the Caldwell family was one of Kentucky’s first multi-millionaire families), both were orphaned quite young when their parents passed away. Educated in Europe, both sisters married into European aristocracy when cash-poor European families were seeking wealthy Americans to marry.

This sculpture can be found in Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville, Kentucky. It was sculpted by Gibert Bayes. It’s listed as part of the Smithsonian’s Save Our Sculpture database.

Garbutt Family Plot-Lyons, Georgia

William Rawlings Garbutt, 1908-1910
Missouri Garbutt (1864-1912) and William Rawlinga Garbutt (1890-1907)

The Garbutt family was a prominent family in Lyons, Georgia. Their wealth was generated by work in the lumber industry Their home still stands in Lyons. You can see it on Brian Brown’s Vanishing Georgia website.
