The James and Lily Gaines House of Adairsville, Georgia

The James and Lily Gaines House was built by Prussian architect, John Schmitz, in 1901 as a “Honeymoon House.” Schmitz relocated to Bartow County after serving in the Civil War as a Union soldier. His architectural work can be seen throughout Bartow County.

The home is a rare example of a brick Queen Anne home in Georgia. Built into a hill, the home faces downtown and the rail line. It is believed the bricks came in via the rail since there isn’t a record of a brick manufacturer in the area until 1906.

A long-rumored story about the home is that it was a hospital with a tunnel to the nearby funeral parlor. Unfortunately, this does not seem to be verifiable. It did serve as a hotel at one point.

Information on the house was culled from Maggie Ball’s research of the home.

Fairview Methodist Church-Rydal, Georgia

The congregation of Fairview Methodist Church began in 1882 under the leadership of Tom Upshaw. The historic Black congregation built this Gothic Revival church in 1932 after the first church was severely damaged in a storm.

I am uncertain when the congregation stopped services. There is a very overgrown cemetery behind the church. I could see one marker that had a date of the 1990s on it.

Vinnie’s Cabin-Cartersville, Georgia

Behind a beauty salon in Cartersville sits a rare extant “urban” slave cabin. It was one of ten cabins that sat on the property of Elijiah and Cornelia Field.

After the Civil War, Vinnie Salters Johnson moved to Cartersville and cooked for the Fields family. She lived in this cabin with her son. It became the home of Vinnie Salters Johnson and her son, Cafaries Johnson.

The cabin was restored a few years ago after the roof and floor collapsed. The walls are original to the cabin.

Allatoona Universalist Church-Allatoona, Georgia

The Allatoona Universalist Church was founded in 1910. It doubled as a school for the area until one was built closer to the train tracks.

St. James AME Church-Cassville, Georgia

Bartow County

Organized in 1872, this Cassville church began as a Presbyterian Church prior to the Civil War, but after the Civil War, the land and the church was given to Black families to start a new church.
