Screven Colored School-Screven, Georgia

Here is an image of a new Rosenwald School in 1918 in Wayne County, Georgia I found in a 1918 report on Georgia schools. At the moment, I do not know if this school is still standing.

New Consolidated School Building-Weston, Georgia

I often go down rabbit holes looking for information. This can mean looking at random public domain books and reports. I decided to start sharing some of the images I find. This image is from the 1921 Fiftieth Annual Report of the Department of Education to the General Assembly of the State of Georgia.

I believe this school is the Greenfield Academy, and that part of it is still standing according to Google Street View.

Black Rock School-Chester County, South Carolina

The adjacent Black Rock Baptist Church was founded in 1874. By 1884, the church was educating Black schoolchildren. A one room schoolhouse was built around the turn of the century. It was used until 1957 when school consolidation began.

Mauk School-Mauk, Georgia

Taylor County

Built in 1936 with WPA funds, the Mauk School was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008. The school served the small community of Mauk until the 1950s when the consolidation of schools began in earnest.

The school started as a six classroom school until the 1946 when a classroom was converted into a lunchroom. The school fell into disuse after consolidation until the private Mauk Academy was started in response to school desegregation. It was open to white students who no longer wanted to attend public schools.

The school is still in use as a community center and is managed by a local group.
