The Clayton Presbyterian Church was founded in 1874 by Reverend G. R. Foster under the auspices of the Presbytery of East Alabama. The church was built in 1881 at the cost of $2400.

Eclectic Queen Anne Cottage-Clayton, Alabama

Clayton, Alabama needs to declare the area around its downtown area a historic district. There are so many beautiful houses and a few churches in the surrounding area that need this recognition. It would also help keep the history of the buildings.

The build date for this home is 1885. That is all I can find.

Built in 1900, this home, most recently, was a restaurant. I love it so much.

The Whiskey Bottle Tombstone of William T. Mullen-Clayton, Alabama

William T. Mullen (1834-1863) liked whiskey too much for his wife, Mary. She threatened she would put a whiskey bottle marker on his grave if he didn’t sober up.

He died on July 18, 1863, one month before his daughter, Mary Arabella, who died on August 13, 1863, at the age of 14 months.

Jones Chapel AME Church-Clayton, Alabama

Jones Chapel AME Church is an historic church in Clayton, Alabama. I am unable to find much info on the church. I reviewed old obituaries and other notifications in the newspaper and know the congregation has existed since at least 1906. I suspect the church was built around the same time period.

Grace Episcopal Church-Clayton, Alabama

This Gothic Revival Church was completed in 1876 on land donated by Henry DeLamar Clayton, the town’s namesake and former president of the University of Alabama. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995.
