One of my favorite Victorians in Hartwell
Lucy Craft Laney House-Augusta, Georgia
Lucy Craft Laney (1854-1933) was an educator and founded the first school for Black children in Augusta, Georgia. She served as the principal of the Haines Institute for Industrial and Normal Education for 50 years.
Under the leadership of the Augusta Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, the house was fully restored into a museum of Black history that honored the legacy of Lucy Craft Laney. The full story of the restoration and how the museum came to existence can be found here. It is a contributing property to the Laney-Walker Historic District which was added to the National Register of Historic Properties in 1985.
Story House-Dearing, Georgia
Based on the tax records of nearby houses, I be believe this Gothic Revival house was built in 1900. It seems to have been in the Story family for several decades.
Queen Anne Farmhouse-Warren County, Georgia
Brian Brown identified this as the John Hart house.
John McCown House-Mayfield, Georgia
This house has fueled the imagination of many because it is so beautiful, and I wish it could be saved. I understand from those that have been inside the house has been stripped of all the interesting details. It’s still a beautiful Queen Anne, though. I like to drive by it anytime I am in the area.
More recently known as the John McCown house, the Hancock County political organizer, tax records show the house was built in 1900, which might be a little late.
You can read the 2012 John Rozier book about McCown.
Corry House-Siloam, Georgia
